Best Gun Cabinets: The Ones That Put the Steel in Writing

Gun cabinet listings will tell you the color, the number of rifles and the speed of the fingerprint reader, and then go quiet about the steel. This list keeps only gun cabinets that state a steel gauge, sorted from thickest steel, then by long-gun capacity.

Why this rule: the steel gauge, in writing

A gun cabinet is a steel locker for long guns. It's lighter than a gun safe, usually without a fire rating and usually without an independent burglary rating. Its job is to keep firearms locked away from people who shouldn't handle them. That's a real job, and a cabinet can do it well.

What separates one gun cabinet from another, on paper, is mostly the steel. Locks, racks and shelves vary too, but they're hard to compare across brands. Steel gauge is a number with a federal definition behind it.

So the rule is simple: a gun cabinet makes this list only if the maker or the Amazon listing states its steel gauge. Then the list is sorted:

  1. Thickest steel first. Gauge numbers run backwards. Under the U.S. Standard Gauge, 14 gauge is 0.0781 in and 12 gauge is 0.1094 in. A 16- or 18-gauge sheet is thinner than both.
  2. Then long-gun capacity, largest first, for cabinets with the same gauge.

The list is short. That's the rule doing its job. Very few gun cabinet listings state a steel gauge at all. Most give a gun count, a lock type and a photo of the racks. A cabinet with no gauge in writing can't be compared on steel, so it isn't here.

How to read the best gun cabinet list

  • Gauge column. Lower is thicker. A 14 beats a 16.
  • Interior dimensions. Often missing on cabinet listings. The outside height minus the top and bottom panels, and any top shelf, is the room you have for long guns. Measure your longest gun with its scope.
  • Gun count. An upper limit for thin, unscoped long guns. Some listings add handguns into the same number.
  • Lock column. Key only, keypad, fingerprint, or a combination. Electronic locks need a backup key and a way to power the keypad from outside.
  • Fire and burglary columns. Expect dashes. A gun cabinet without a stated fire rating has no fire protection you can count on.
  • A dash ("—"). Nobody we found put that value in writing.

The sort is a reading order. The first row has the thickest steel we could confirm. It isn't an award.

Best gun locker or gun cabinet: what the job actually is

The names overlap. A gun locker, a gun cabinet and a "steel gun safe cabinet" are mostly the same product: a tall, light steel box with a lock and a rack. The label is a marketing choice.

What a gun cabinet does well:

  • Controlled access. It keeps firearms locked away from children, visitors and anyone else in the household who shouldn't have them.
  • Organization. Racks, shelves and door pockets keep guns and accessories in one place.
  • Fit. Cabinets are often narrow and light enough for a closet or a bedroom wall.

What a gun cabinet usually doesn't do:

  • Resist a determined attack. Thin steel and simple locks aren't built for that. For burglary resistance, look for a UL Residential Security Container (RSC) rating under UL 1037, which is a gun safe feature.
  • Protect against fire. Without a stated fire rating, assume none.

For comparison, California's published gun safe standard asks for 12-gauge walls and a door of 7-gauge or double 12-gauge steel, or a UL RSC listing from a recognized lab. Cabinets in this list don't claim either. That doesn't make them useless. It makes them cabinets.

Our gun safe vs gun cabinet guide goes through the difference in detail.

Best cheap gun cabinet: what to check before price

Most gun cabinets sit in the lower price tiers. We don't publish prices, because they change daily; the Check price button shows the current one. Within any price range, four things matter more than the gun count:

  1. Steel gauge in writing. If the listing doesn't say, ask the seller. If they won't say, that's an answer too.
  2. A backup to the lock. A key, and for electronic locks an external battery box or USB port.
  3. Anchor holes. Pre-drilled holes in the back or floor, and the right bolts for your wall or floor. A light cabinet that isn't anchored can be tipped or carried off. Our bolting guide covers the basics.
  4. Interior height. Your longest gun, scope included, against the inside height below any top shelf or lock box.

Assembly, racks and door pockets matter for daily use. But the steel and the anchoring are what decide whether the cabinet stays locked and stays put.

Where a gun cabinet goes: wall, floor, closet

A gun cabinet is light enough to go almost anywhere, which is also its weak point. Where you put it decides how well it does its job.

Against a wall, bolted through the back. Many slim cabinets are pre-drilled for wall mounting. Bolts into studs or masonry keep a tall, narrow cabinet from tipping, and make it harder to carry off. Hollow drywall anchors alone are not the same thing.

On the floor, bolted down. Where the cabinet has floor holes, use them as well. Concrete takes different hardware from a wooden floor. The manual names what the maker expects.

In a closet. A closet hides the cabinet and keeps it out of sight of visitors. Check the depth of the closet against the cabinet with its door open, and check the ceiling height if there's a shelf above.

Not in a damp garage or basement without a plan. A closed steel box holds whatever moisture is in the room. Our gun safe humidity guide covers dehumidifiers and target levels, and the advice applies to cabinets too.

Before you choose a spot, our where to put a gun safe guide walks through floors, rooms and access. Most of it applies to a cabinet with less weight to worry about.

Gun cabinets and children: the plain part

If children live in or visit the home, the cabinet should stay locked whenever the firearms are not in your hands. Keep the backup key and the code where a child cannot find or reach them.

The Department of Justice Safe Storage Fact Sheet says keeping firearms locked, unloaded and stored away from ammunition can significantly reduce the risk that children and teens use them to hurt themselves or others. Storage requirements differ by state. Check your state's official government site. Nothing here is legal advice.

What this list leaves out, and why

  • Gun cabinets with no stated gauge. Most cabinet listings. They appear on the full gun cabinets table, with a dash in the gauge column.
  • Gun safes. Heavier steel and different ratings. See gun safes.
  • Cabinets not available on Amazon US this week. We check availability weekly.
  • Amazon's own brands. Not listed anywhere on the site.

No star rating, review count or editor's score is used. A cabinet is here because its steel gauge is in writing.

Who should look elsewhere

  • Every gun cabinet we track. The gun cabinets and gun lockers tables show all of them, gauge stated or not.
  • A small gun safe in the same price range. Our best budget gun safes list sorts low-tier gun safes by steel thickness, and several state 14- or 15-gauge steel.
  • Burglary or fire ratings. Start with gun safes and our UL safe ratings guide.

Ask for the gauge. Measure the longest gun. Then check the price, and bolt it down.

Questions people ask about gun cabinets

What is the best gun cabinet?

The one that fits your long guns, has a lock you'll use every time, and can be anchored to the floor or wall. This list narrows the field to gun cabinets that state their steel gauge, because that's the one construction number you can compare across brands.

What is the difference between a gun cabinet and a gun safe?

Neither term has a legal construction definition. In practice, gun cabinets use thinner steel and simpler locks and usually have no fire rating. A gun safe is more likely to carry a UL Residential Security Container (RSC) rating and a stated fire rating. Read the listing rather than the name.

Is a gun locker the same as a gun cabinet?

Mostly, yes. The two names are used for the same kind of product: a light steel cabinet with a lock, built for long guns. Our gun lockers page and gun cabinets page track the same type of product.

Are gun cabinets fire resistant?

Most are not. Treat a cabinet without a stated fire rating as having no fire protection. Neither cabinet in this list claims a fire rating.

Should a gun cabinet be bolted down?

Yes. A light cabinet that isn't anchored can be tipped over or carried off. Use the pre-drilled holes and follow the manual for floor or wall mounting.

Why are there so few gun cabinets in this list?

Because very few gun cabinet listings state a steel gauge. The rule only accepts a gauge in writing from the maker or the listing. When more cabinets state one, more will appear here.
