Cheap Gun Safe Guide: What the Budget Tier Leaves Out

A cheap gun safe is defined by its price tier, not its specs

This page lists gun safes and handgun safes in our budget price tiers. The tier comes from the Amazon price at our last check. Prices move, so the tier can change between checks, and the Check price button shows today's number.

That makes "cheap" a moving target. A low cost gun safe this month may sit a tier higher next month. What doesn't move is the spec sheet. Steel gauge, lock type, ratings and weight stay the same whatever the price does, so the rest of this page is about those.

The table mixes two kinds of product:

• Long-gun safes: budget rifle safes, often tall and narrow, often lighter than full-size safes
• Handgun safes: small boxes for one to a few pistols, usually with a keypad or fingerprint lock

Who an affordable gun safe is for, and who should skip it

An affordable gun safe fits a clear, limited job: keep firearms locked and away from people who shouldn't handle them.

It suits:

• A first safe for a few guns, where controlled access is the main goal
• Households with children or visitors who need a lock between them and a firearm
• A second location, such as a bedroom or a cabin, where the main safe isn't
• Renters who can't move a heavy safe up stairs

Skip it if:

• You need tested burglary resistance. Look for a UL RSC rating, which many budget safes don't carry.
• Fire protection is the reason you're buying. A budget safe with no independent fire rating isn't a fire safe. Our fire-rated gun safes page lists those with a stated rating.

Children and storage laws

If children live in or visit the home, keep the safe locked whenever it isn't in your hands, and keep the code and backup key out of their reach. A budget safe does that job as well as an expensive one, as long as it stays closed.

Storage laws differ by state. A U.S. Department of Justice commentary on model safe storage legislation notes that some states require secure storage only when a minor could gain access, some when a prohibited person is present, and some whenever a firearm is unattended. What you give up with a cheap gun safe, spec by spec

Budget safes are cheaper for reasons, and the reasons are on the spec sheet. Here's what usually goes first, and how to spot it.

Steel thickness

Body steel is the first place to look on a budget listing. Gauge runs backwards: lower number, thicker steel. Under the federal standard gauge table:

16-gauge is a little over half the thickness of 12-gauge. A listing that says "heavy-duty steel" without a gauge hasn't given you a number to compare. Treat a missing gauge as unknown, not as thick.

California's Department of Justice standard asks for walls of at least 12-gauge steel and a door of 7-gauge plate or two layers of 12-gauge. It's a state rule, but a handy yardstick anywhere.

Independent burglary rating

A UL Residential Security Container (RSC) rating means the safe resisted a 5-minute attack by one person with common hand tools and a small electric drill, without the door opening or a 4-inch hole being made. It's a modest test. It's also the main independent burglary test a home gun safe can carry, and many budget safes don't list one.

No RSC label doesn't mean the safe failed. It means no independent lab result is on the listing.

Fire rating

Fire insulation adds weight and cost, so the budget tier is where fire claims get vague. A real fire rating names three things: time, temperature and who tested it. UL describes its label as a class, the maximum interior temperature during testing, plus a time rating.

Claims to read twice:

• "Fireproof" with no lab named. That's a manufacturer claim.
• "Up to" a temperature. That's a ceiling on the claim, not a test result.
• A temperature with no interior class. The furnace was hot. How hot the inside got is the number you need.

The Marketing Department loves the word "fireproof." UL doesn't use it.

Locks and bolts

At the low end, check three things about the lock:

• Backup access. A backup key, and where the battery sits.
• Bolt size and count. California asks for at least three ½-inch steel bolts. More bolts on a thin door don't add much.
• Recall history, especially for biometric locks. This part is plain.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced several recalls and warnings for biometric gun safes since 2023 because the fingerprint lock could open for unauthorized users. Examples include about 60,000 Awesafe biometric gun safes recalled on February 22, 2024, and about 9,100 BBRKIN and MouTec safes (model QHXP029B, sold on Amazon) recalled on July 9, 2026. On August 1, 2024, CPSC also warned owners to stop using the biometric feature on about 7,600 Owsoo and Cacagoo safes, whose sellers did not agree to a recall. Earlier, in 2018, about 25,000 electronic handgun safes sold by Harbor Freight Tools were recalled because they could open on impact. Search the model at cpsc.gov before you buy.

Weight and capacity

Thinner steel means a lighter safe. That helps on stairs and makes anchoring essential. Advertised gun counts, at any price, rarely say whether they assume scopes or slings. Compare interior height and depth with your longest and widest gun.

How to read the budget gun safe table

Every row is a gun or handgun safe in our budget tiers at our last check. Variants of the same model share a row. A dash means the manufacturer or listing didn't confirm that spec.

A sensible order for choosing:

1. Pick the type first. Long guns need a rifle safe; handguns alone fit a handgun safe.
2. Find the steel gauge. Rows that state one are easier to compare. Lower is thicker.
3. Check for an RSC rating and a lab-named fire rating. Rated and claimed aren't equal, even with the same minutes.
4. Check the lock and its backup. For biometric locks, check recalls.
5. Compare weight and interior size. Then confirm today's price, since the tier can change.

When two budget safes look the same, the one with more specs in writing gives you more to hold it to.

Decide what the safe has to do before you look at the price: lock guns away from kids and visitors, slow down a thief, or survive a fire. Then pick the budget row whose steel, lock and ratings match that job, search the model on cpsc.gov, and check the price. Bolt it to the floor the day it arrives.
