Best Gun Safes: A Fire Rating in Minutes and Steel You Can Name
Every gun safe listing calls itself the best; very few say what for. This list takes the gun safes we track and keeps only those with a stated fire rating of at least 30 minutes and a body of 14-gauge steel or thicker, sorted by fire rating, then steel.

Why this rule: a fire rating in minutes and steel thickness in writing
"Best" has no lab definition. No standard ranks gun safes against each other. So this list doesn't rank by opinion, popularity or review count. It filters by two things you can check on paper, then sorts by them.
A stated fire rating of 30 minutes or more. The rating has to name a duration. A listing that says "fire resistant" with no minutes doesn't qualify. Neither does one rated for less than half an hour. A fire rating matters for a home gun safe because the same box often ends up holding passports, deeds and the one rifle that can't be replaced.
A body of 14-gauge steel or thicker. Gauge numbers run backwards. Under the federal U.S. Standard Gauge, 14 gauge is 0.0781 in and 12 gauge is 0.1094 in, so a lower number means thicker steel. A 10-gauge body is thicker again. Thin steel with a long fire claim is still thin steel, which is why both conditions apply at once.
The two conditions together leave out a lot of gun safes. That's the point. What stays is a short list of the best gun safes by the two numbers that are hardest to fake on a listing: how long the fire claim runs, and how thick the walls are.
Then the list is sorted: longest fire rating first, and within the same rating, thickest steel first. The sort is a reading order, not a medal table. The first row is not "the winner". It's the safe with the longest fire claim.
How to read the best gun safe list
The table sits under the header. Below it, each safe gets a short verdict. Read them together.
Fire rating columns. Minutes, test temperature and who tested it. "Rated" means an independent lab is named, such as UL or Intertek (ETL). "Claimed" means the manufacturer states the number and no lab is named. Expect most gun safe fire numbers to be claims.
Burglary column. UL RSC is a burglary rating under UL 1037. It says nothing about fire. A safe can have one rating, both, or neither.
Gauge column. Lower is thicker. A 10 beats a 14.
A dash ("—"). Nobody we found put that value in writing. It is not a zero and not a "no". It's a question to ask before you buy.
Interior dimensions. These matter more than the gun count. The advertised count assumes thin, unscoped long guns packed shoulder to shoulder.
Two kinds of fire numbers share the same column, and they are not the same thing. An in-house rating usually names the furnace temperature outside the safe. A UL 72 class names the maximum temperature inside the safe during the test. UL describes Class 350 as intended to protect paper records. An outside number describes the fire. An inside number describes the result. Compare in-house claims with in-house claims, and lab classes with lab classes.
These aren't gun safe reviews of the kind where someone drills a door. They are spec reads. Every number in the table and the verdicts comes from the manufacturer's page or the Amazon listing, with the source recorded. Where the two disagree, the verdict says so.
What this list leaves out, and why
Plenty of good gun safes aren't here. Here's why a safe can miss the cut:
No fire duration in writing. A safe sold as fire-resistant without minutes can't be compared to one that names them.
No steel gauge in writing. Some makers state steel thickness in another unit, or not at all. A safe with a lab-named fire rating can miss this list because its gauge isn't stated. Our fire-rated gun safes list has no gauge condition and catches those.
Thinner steel. 15-, 16- and 18-gauge bodies are common on lighter safes and cabinets. They're not on this list.
Not available on Amazon US this week. We check availability weekly. A safe that drops out of stock drops off the list until it comes back.
Amazon's own brands. We don't list them anywhere on the site.
What the list does not use, at all: star ratings, review counts, "best seller" badges, or any editor's score. If a safe is on the list, it's because two numbers in writing passed the rule.
Best long gun safe for the money: what to compare within a budget
Prices aren't shown on this site, because they change daily. Each row has a Check price button that shows the current Amazon price. Most of the safes this rule selects are large and sit in the upper price tiers. That follows from the rule: thick steel and long fire claims add weight, and weight adds cost.
If a lower price range is the main constraint, the rule needs to change, not the reading of it. Our budget gun safes list starts from the lowest price tiers and sorts by steel thickness instead.
Within any budget, compare what's in writing, in this order:
Interior dimensions against your longest gun, scope included.
Burglary rating: UL RSC or none.
Fire rating as three parts: how long, how hot, who tested it.
Steel gauge of the body, and what the door is made of.
Lock and backup: keypad, dial or fingerprint, plus a key or override you can actually use.
The best rifle safe for one household is the wrong one for the next. A collector with scoped rifles needs interior depth. A family with papers in the safe needs the fire line. Pick the number that matters to you and read that column first.
Who should look elsewhere
This list is for people buying a full-size home gun safe for long guns and wanting both fire and steel in writing. Other buyers have better starting points:
Controlled access, not burglary resistance. A gun cabinet is lighter steel and usually has no fire rating. Our gun safe vs gun cabinet guide covers the trade.
Fire first, steel second. The best fire-rated gun safes list sorts by fire rating alone, from 45 minutes up.
Every gun safe, no filter. The full gun safes table shows everything we track, with "—" where values are missing.
Burglary ratings in detail. Our UL safe ratings guide explains each RSC level.
Before you order a large gun safe
The heaviest safes on this list weigh more than half a ton, per their makers. That makes three checks worth doing before you click.
Measure the path, not just the spot. Doorways, stairs, turns, and the floor where the safe will stand. Our gun safe dimensions guide shows how to turn interior numbers into a real capacity.
Read the delivery terms. Large safes usually ship by freight. Curbside and in-home delivery are different services. Our moving a gun safe guide covers the last few feet.
Plan the anchor. A gun safe that isn't bolted down gives up much of its burglary resistance. Read the bolting guide before the safe arrives, not after.
Write down your longest gun with its scope. Filter the table for the fire line you need. Then check the price, and bolt it down.

There is no single best gun safe. There is the one that fits your guns, your floor and the rating you want in writing. This list narrows the field to gun safes with a stated fire rating of 30 minutes or more and 14-gauge or thicker steel. From there, compare interior dimensions, the burglary rating and the lock backup.
What is the best gun safe for the money?
We don't publish prices because they change daily. Within a price range, compare what is in writing: fire rating with time, temperature and tester, steel gauge, UL RSC burglary rating, interior dimensions and lock backup. Each row has a Check price button that shows the current Amazon price.
Are gun safe ratings independent?
Some are. A UL RSC burglary rating comes from UL testing. Fire ratings on gun safes are often the manufacturer's own claim with no lab named. The table and each verdict say which kind of rating a safe has.
Is a heavier gun safe a better gun safe?
Weight comes mostly from steel and fire lining, so it loosely follows construction. It is not a rating. Compare the steel gauge, the burglary rating and the fire rating directly, and use the weight to plan delivery and placement.
Can a gun safe hold documents too?
Yes, many people keep papers in a gun safe. UL describes its Class 350 fire rating as intended to protect paper records. Most gun safe fire ratings are not UL classes, so read who tested the safe and what temperature the number describes.
How often does this list change?
We check every product's availability each week. A safe that is no longer available on Amazon US drops out, and a new one that meets the rule joins. The rule itself stays the same.
