Apartment Gun Safe Guide: Gun Safes for Renters and Upper Floors

An apartment gun safe is a gun safe or handgun safe light enough to get up stairs, small enough for a rental closet, and workable when you can't drill wherever you like. Our table uses a 200 lb cutoff. The safe has to get past the landlord, the elevator and the stairwell before it ever meets a burglar.

An apartment gun safe is defined by weight, size and the lease

There's no special kind of safe built for apartments. A gun safe for apartment use is any gun or handgun safe that works within three limits a house doesn't impose:

  • Weight. Stairs, elevators and upper floors all limit what can be delivered.
  • Size. Rental closets are often shallow, and doors are often narrow.
  • Anchoring. You may not be allowed to drill, and the floor may be wood framing over someone else's ceiling.

Our table uses the first limit as its rule: gun safes and handgun safes under 200 lb. It doesn't promise that any particular safe suits your building, your floor or your lease.

For the full range of sizes, see our parent page, gun safes. If you're limited to a closet, our closet gun safes and small gun safes pages sort by the dimensions that matter there.

Who an apartment gun safe suits, and who should skip it

A light, compact gun safe suits renters, condo owners and anyone on an upper floor.

It fits:

  • Renters who expect to move, since a lighter safe moves with you
  • Upper-floor apartments where a full-size safe would need a delivery crew and the building's approval
  • Small collections: a few long guns, or handguns only
  • Shared buildings, where noise and delivery logistics matter

Skip a gun safe, or consider something different, if:

  • You own handguns only. A handgun safe is smaller and lighter, and fits a nightstand, drawer or closet shelf.
  • You need tested burglary resistance and can't anchor. An unanchored light safe can be moved. Weigh that before relying on it against theft.
  • You own the condo and the slab is yours. Then a heavier, anchored safe may be possible. Our parent gun safes page covers every size.

Children and storage laws

If children live in or visit the apartment, the safe should stay locked whenever it isn't in your hands. Keep the code and the backup key where a child can't reach or find them. A U.S. Department of Justice fact sheet notes that keeping firearms and ammunition locked has been associated with a lower risk of firearm injuries for children and teens.

Storage laws differ by state. A U.S. Department of Justice commentary on model safe storage legislation notes that some states require secure storage only when a minor could gain access, some when a prohibited person is present, and some whenever a firearm is unattended. Check the Department of Justice commentary and your state's official site. This page is not legal advice.

What to look for in a gun safe for an apartment

The best gun safe for an apartment balances protection against everything the building allows. These specs decide it.

Weight, and the route in

Weight is the first number to check, and the delivery route is the second. Measure the stairwell turns, the elevator door and car, and every doorway between the curb and the closet. Then read the listing's delivery terms: curbside and room-of-choice delivery are different things.

Ask the building about elevator reservations and any weight rules. Our guide to how much a gun safe weighs gives a sense of the range, and how to move a gun safe covers the equipment.

Anchoring without a slab

Anchoring is the part apartments make hard. A light safe that isn't anchored is portable. Picture Kevin, our hypothetical burglar: he doesn't need the combination for a safe he can carry down the stairs.

The options, in order:

  • Floor anchoring with permission. Ask the landlord in writing. Into wood framing, manuals generally say to anchor into the joists where possible. Our guide to bolting a safe to the floor covers wood and carpet.
  • Wall anchoring only if the manual allows it. Liberty Safe says some smaller safes are designed for wall mounting but that it is not recommended for larger free-standing gun safes, and that anchoring through a wall can compromise a fire rating.
  • Concrete floors. Some ground-floor and garage units have a slab. Liberty Safe warns that post-tension slabs are often stamped with a warning not to drill, cut or core. In a rental, assume you need permission either way.
  • Placement as a partial substitute. A safe wedged into a closet corner, out of sight, is harder to wrestle out. It isn't a substitute for an anchor.

Size and interior

Measure the closet depth with the door open and the swing of the safe door. Then compare the safe's interior with your longest and widest gun. Interior dimensions tell you more than the advertised gun count.

Steel, lock and ratings

  • Steel gauge. Lower is thicker. Under the federal gauge table, 12-gauge is 0.1094 in; 14-gauge is 0.0781 in. A lighter safe can mean thinner steel, so the number matters.
  • UL RSC rating. At Level I, the safe resisted a 5-minute attack by one person with common hand tools and a small electric drill. UL 1037 also drop-tests portable security containers onto concrete.
  • Fire rating. Separate from the RSC label; look for time, temperature and the lab.
  • Lock and backup. Keypad, dial or fingerprint. Check where the battery lives and whether there's a backup key.

Noise, neighbors and daytime

Keypads beep. Some can be muted; the manual will say whether yours can. With thin walls, that's worth checking before you buy.

FBI data for 2025 shows burglary was most often reported between noon and 5:59 p.m. That's a daytime window, when many homes are empty, and another reason to anchor a light safe if you can.

Fire in a shared building

In an apartment, a fire can start in someone else's unit. US fire departments responded to an estimated 329,500 home structure fires in 2024, according to the NFPA. That figure covers all homes, not apartments alone, but it's a reason to read the fire column in the table.

If fire protection matters, look for a rating with all three parts: time, temperature and the lab that tested it. A safe with no stated fire rating is a burglary and access product only.

When you move out

A rental safe moves at least once more than a house safe. Before you buy, think about the next apartment as well as this one.

  • Keep the anchor hardware and note how it was installed, so you can repair the holes.
  • Keep the manual and the backup key together, somewhere other than inside the safe.
  • Check the next building's route before you sign the lease, if the safe is heavy.

How to read the apartment gun safe table

Every row is a gun or handgun safe under 200 lb in our data. Variants share a row. A dash means the spec isn't confirmed by the manufacturer or the listing.

To choose:

  1. Start with weight and exterior size. Check them against your stairs, elevator and closet.
  2. Check interior height and depth against your longest and widest gun.
  3. Look at anchoring. Floor holes, wall-mount provisions, or neither.
  4. Compare steel gauge and look for an RSC rating.
  5. Read the fire column as a triple: time, temperature, lab.
  6. Check the lock and its backup.

Two safes of similar weight can differ a lot in steel and interior. The lighter one isn't automatically the better apartment choice; the one that can be anchored often is.

Measure the route from the curb to the closet, read your lease, and ask the landlord in writing about anchoring before the safe arrives. Pick the row that fits the route, the closet and your guns, then check the price. Once permission is in hand, bolt it down.

Questions people ask about apartment gun safes

What is the best gun safe for an apartment?

There is no single best one; it depends on what you store, which floor you live on and what your lease allows. Compare interior size, weight, steel gauge, any UL RSC or fire rating with a named lab, and how the safe can be anchored. The table lists gun and handgun safes under 200 lb.

Can I bolt a gun safe down in an apartment?

Only with the landlord's permission if your lease restricts drilling. Ask in writing before you drill the floor. Some smaller safes are designed for wall mounting, but manufacturers such as Liberty Safe do not recommend wall anchoring for larger free-standing gun safes.

How heavy a gun safe can I put in an apartment?

It depends on the building, the floor and how the safe will be delivered. Ask the landlord or building manager about weight limits and delivery rules, and check the stairs, elevator and doorways. Our table on this page stays under 200 lb.

Is a handgun safe enough for an apartment?

If you only own handguns, a handgun safe is often the most practical choice for an apartment. It is small, light and easier to fix to furniture or a floor. For long guns, you will need a gun safe or cabinet with enough interior height.

Do I need a gun safe in an apartment?

Storage requirements vary by state. Some states require secure storage when a minor could gain access or whenever a firearm is unattended. Check your state's official government site. This page is not legal advice.
